Alt Attribute & Seo

SEO Optimization images has become more and more important in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for websites. The ALT attribute is a critical step that is sometimes forgotten. This is often a lost chance of better rankings.

In Google's webmaster guidelines, they advise using alternative text for the images on your web site:

Images:. Use the alt attribute to provide descriptive text. In addition, we recommend utilizing a human-readable caption and descriptive text around the image.

Why would they ask us to do that? The answer is simple, really; search engines like google have the same problem as blind users. They can't begin to see the images.

Many webmasters and inexperienced or unethical SEOs abuse the use of this attribute, trying to stuff it with keywords, looking to achieve a certain keyword density, which isn't as relevant for rankings now as it was previously.

On the contrary, high keyword density can, on some search engines, trigger spam filters, which might create a penalty for your site's ranking. Even without this type of penalty, your site's rankings will not take advantage of this tactic.
This method also puts persons who use screen readers at a greater disadvantage. Screen readers are software-based tools that actually read aloud the contents of what is shown on the screen. In browsing the net, the alt attributes of images are read aloud as well.

Imagine hearing a paragraph of text that is then repetitions of many keywords. The page will be not even close to accessible, and, to put it bluntly, will be found quite annoying.
What exactly is an Alt attribute?

An ALT attribute should not be used like a description or perhaps a label to have an image, though many people use it for the reason that fashion. Though it may appear natural to assume that alternate text is a label or perhaps a description, it's not!

What used within an image's alt attribute ought to be its text equivalent and convey the same information or serve exactly the same purpose the image would.

The thing would be to supply the same functional information that a visual user would see. The alt attribute text should be the "stand in" when the look is unavailable. Think about this question: Should you replace the image with the text, would most users receive the same basic information, and would it generate the same response?
Some examples:

Some SEO Optimization Tips

If a search button is really a magnifying glass or binoculars its alt text ought to be 'search' or 'find' not 'magnifying glass' or 'binoculars'.

If an image is meant to convey the literal contents of the image, a description is suitable.

If it is meant to convey data, then that data is what's appropriate.

If it is meant to convey using a function, then the function itself is what ought to be used.

Some Alt Attribute Guidelines:

Always add alt attributes to images. Alt is mandatory for accessibility as well as for valid XHTML.

For images that play merely a decorative role within the page, use an empty alt (i.e. alt="") or perhaps a CSS background image so that reading browsers don't bother users by uttering such things as "spacer image".

Keep in mind that it's the function from the image we are trying to convey. For instance; any button images shouldn't include the word "button" in the alt text. They should emphasize the action performed by the button.

Alt text should be determined by context. Exactly the same image in a different context may require drastically different alt text.

Attempt to flow alt text with the rest from the text because that is the way it will be read with adaptive technologies like screen readers. Someone listening to your page should hardly be aware that a graphic image is there.
Please keep in mind that using an alt attribute for every image is required to meet the minimum WAI requirements, which are used as the benchmark for accessibility laws in UK and the remainder of Europe. Also, they are necessary to meet "Section 508" accessibility requirements in the US.

It is important to categorize non-text content into three levels:

Eye-Candy
Mood-Setting
Content and Function

I. Eye-Candy

Eye-Candy are stuff that serve no purpose other than to make a site visually appealing/attractive and (in many cases) satisfy the marketing departments. There isn't any content value (though there may be value to some sighted user).

Never alt-ify eye-candy unless there is something there which will boost the usability from the site for somebody using a non-visual user agent. Use a null alt attribute or background images in CSS for eye-candy.

II. Mood-Setting

This is the middle layer of graphics which may actually set the atmosphere or set the stage as it were. These graphics are not direct content and may not be considered essential, but they're essential in that they help frame what is going on.

Attempt to alt-ify the second group as is sensible and is relevant. There may be times when doing this might be annoying or detrimental to other users. Then try to avoid it.

For example; Alt text that's just like adjacent text is unnecessary, as well as an irritant to screen reader users. I recommend alt="" or background CSS images in such instances. But sometimes, it's important to get this content in there for all users.

Usually this will depend on context. Exactly the same image inside a different context may need drastically different alt text. Obviously, content should always be fully available. How you use this example is really a judgment call.

III. Content and Function

This is when the look is the actual content. Always alt-ify content and functional images. Title and long description attributes can also be in order.
The main reason many authors can't figure out why their alt text isn't working is they don't know why the pictures exist. You need to figured out precisely what function an image serves. Consider what it is concerning the image that's vital that you the page's intended audience.

Every graphic has a reason for standing on that page: since it either improves the theme/ mood/ atmosphere or it is critical to what are the page is trying to describe. Knowing what the look is perfect for makes alt text simpler to write. And practice writing them definitely helps.
A method to look into the usefulness of alternative text would be to imagine reading the page over the telephone to someone. What would you say when encountering a specific image to create the page understandable to the listener?

Besides the alt attribute you have a couple more tools available for images.
First, in level of descriptiveness title is in between alt and longdesc. It adds useful information and may add flavor. The title attribute is optionally rendered through the user agent. Remember they're invisible and not shown like a "tooltip" when focus is received through the keyboard. (So much for device independence). So use the title attribute only for advisory information.
Second, the longdesc attribute points towards the Link to a full description of an image. When the information found in an image is important towards the concept of the page (i.e. some important content will be lost when the image was removed), a longer description compared to "alt" attribute can reasonably display ought to be used. It can provide for rich, expressive documentation of the visual image.

It ought to be used when alt and title are insufficient to embody the visual qualities of an image. As Clark [1] states, "A longdesc is really a long description of an image...The goal is to use any period of description necessary to impart the facts from the graphic.

It wouldn't be remiss to hope that a long description conjures an image - the look - in the mind's eye, an analogy that holds true even for the totally blind."

Although the alt attribute is mandatory for web accessibility as well as for valid (X)HTML, not every images need alternative text, long descriptions, or titles.

Oftentimes, you're best just choosing your gut instinct -- if it's not necessary to incorporate it, and if you don't have a strong urge to do it, don't include that longdesc.

However, if it's essential for the whole page to work, then you've to add the alt text (or title or longdesc).

What's necessary and what's not depends a lot on the function of the image and it is context on the page.

Exactly the same image may need alt text (or title or longdesc) in one spot, although not in another. If an image provides absolutely no content or functional information alt="" or background CSS images may be appropriate to use. However, if the image provides content or adds functional information an alt would be required and perhaps a long description would be in order. In many cases this kind of thing is really a judgement call.

Image Search Engine Optimization Tips

Listed below are key stages in optimizing images:

Choose a logical file name that reinforces the keywords. You should use hyphens within the file name to isolate the keyword, but avoid to exceeding two hyphens. Avoid using underscores like a word separator, like for example "brilliant-diamonds.jpg";

Label the file extension. For example, if the image internet search engine sees a ".jpg" (JPEG) file extension, it's going to assume the file is a photo, and if it sees a ".gif" (GIF) file extension, it's likely to assume that it is a graphic;

Ensure that the text nearby the image that is highly relevant to that image.
Again, do not lose a great chance to help your site with your images in search engines. Begin using these steps to rank better on all of the engines and drive more traffic for your site TODAY.

SEO Optimization

Last week, I was on a panel at a CTIA pre-conference show in Orlando, and a question that was asked during several sessions at the conference was “what should we invest in: a mobile site or a mobile app?”

I heard this same question in a panel I was on at Digiday Mobile in September 2010, and earlier at the Mobile Search App Opportunities session at SMX West 2010, so it’s clear that this is still a question that marketers and developers are still struggling with, and have been since the opening of Apple’s App Store in 2008.

If you’re lucky enough not to be familiar with the question, brands with limited resources often wonder whether they really need to build both a mobile site and a mobile app, and would prefer to funnel their limited resources into one fully-funded mobile project.

Mobile apps have historically been seen by web designers as the only way to provide a rich user experience in mobile, and they are recommended frequently by CEOs who have been impressed by the user experience of an app and then fast-tracked their own mobile app project.

Why are companies still struggling with this issue after three years of talking about it? I think that’s because it’s a complex issue with more than one right answer depending on your business goals and objectives.

Add to that the countless partisan debates between those who want to sell you a mobile app and those who want to sell you a mobile site and it can be difficult to get to some semblance of truth about what it actually makes sense for your business to invest in.

As an SEO, I’m not selling mobile apps or mobile sites, and I can help you optimize either for more qualified traffic in search, but I’ve seen enough to know that the strongest mobile strategies start with a mobile web site and use it as the foundation for success.

Consider the following problems inherent with betting the farm on a mobile app:

 • The most successful iPhone app project, which becomes viral enough to be passed around to every user on the platform, would only ultimately reach only 7% of the total mobile market. A mobile website or mobile web app, on the other hand, has the potential to reach 100% of mobile web users.

 • Many iPhone apps require the current version of iOS to run, which can’t be run by first-generation iPod touches. According to Chitika research, these devices account for almost 10% of iPhone traffic, which could lower your reach even more. Android devices are even more fragmented, and could require additional development time to make your applications accessible to the already-limited app market. Mobile websites and web apps built with a progressive enhancement strategy, however, should be accessible to most users regardless of device.

 • It’s a myth that users prefer a mobile app experience, largely propagated, I suspect, by those who are looking to sell additional services. Research shows that most users, in fact, prefer mobile websites over mobile apps (Adobe, eMarketer, InsightExpress), and that more people use mobile websites than apps.

 • Users of search engines will likely not find your app in Google or Bing unless they’re looking for it. You can optimize the app for app stores and to some extent for Google, but it’s a different process that requires some specialized knowledge for success. As of this writing, it’s highly unlikely that searchers will find your app when searching on high volume, competitive keywords in search engines outside of app stores unless you buy a search ad. Given that 21.4% of mobile users in the United States search on their phones, a brand that wants the content it creates to find an audience would be wise not to ignore traffic from mobile search.

 • Most apps are downloaded once and discarded (Pinch Media, Localytics). If you don’t have a good reason for creating your app and don’t ultimately succeed in creating an app that people need to use regularly, it’s likely that your app will suffer the same fate.

 • There are very few apps that exist that provide something beyond what a mobile web site can do. If you’re creating a game or an application that truly cannot exist on the mobile web as it exists today, then by all means, build an app. However, given that Safari now has support for accelerometer and gyrometer, there are many things that mobile websites can do now that they couldn’t do previously. Be sure that you can’t build your mobile app as a web app before you build it, as there’s a good chance that you could build something similar with greater reach and engagement.

 • Apps drive link equity to iTunes, Android Market, or Blackberry App World, and not to your website, which needs it to help your other content be found in search results. Even mobile websites at m.subdomains ultimately benefit the host domain, which could help you generate more revenue on your desktop, tablet and mobile websites if they’re hosted at the same domain.

 • Apps are software. As such, they’re not currently able to be crawled and indexed as individual pages with a separate theme. It’s likely that you will index and rank one or two mobile applications pages for navigational keywords for apps, but you have the potential to rank as many pages as you have accessible pages with web apps. If your app is relevant to more than one concept or audience, building it as an accessible, open web app instead of a native application will give you greater relevance and reach.

There are good reasons for creating native apps as well, so I don’t want to make it seem as though creating a mobile website is all any business needs to reach its mobile target. For example, if you build a mobile website and not an app, you run the risk of alienating your brand from the audience that does prefer mobile apps and uses them regularly.

That audience, though, is the minority target; and if you only have funds to build one experience—mobile web or native mobile app—my recommendation is to build the best mobile web app you can afford, market it as aggressively as possible, and use the money you make and the data you collect to experiment with native apps.

If you can afford it, of course, the best solution is to build both a mobile site and a mobile app, and to enjoy not having to answer this question of limited resources that many businesses are struggling with today.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said in an interview this week that he would consider returning to an active role at the company he helped start if asked.

During an interview in England this week, Wozniak said, "I'd consider it, yeah," when asked whether he would play a more active role if asked, Reuters reports.

Wozniak, Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne founded Apple Computer in 1976. Wozniak left his full-time role with the company in 1987, but remains an employee and shareholder of Apple.

Since leaving Apple, Wozniak has been involved in a wide range of entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors. He currently serves as Chief Scientist for storage company Fusion-io.

Meanwhile, Jobs is currently taking an indefinite leave of absence to focus on his health, though he remains CEO of Apple and continues to be involved in strategic decisions.

Wozniak, who has widely been acknowledged as the technical genius behind Apple's early success, believes that he has a lot to offer the company he helped start, which went on to become the world's second-largest company in terms of market value.

"There's just an awful lot I know about Apple products and competing products that has some relevance, some meaning. They're my own feelings, though," Wozniak said during the interview.

When asked his opinion on Apple today, Wozniak praised the company for its track record with recent products. "Unbelievable," he said, "The products, one after another, quality and hits."

Even so, Wozniak admitted that he'd prefer Apple's devices to be more open, so he can "get in there and add [his] own touches." Last December, Wozniak revealed that he had purchased a DIY kit for the iPhone 4 and "modded" the device into the as-yet-unreleased white version.

"My thinking is that Apple could be more open and not lose sales," said Wozniak, while adding, "I'm sure they're making the right decisions for the right reasons for Apple."

Wozniak has been committed to openness since the beginning. In December, Wozniak told reporters that he didn't design the original Apple I to make a lot of money and had given the designs away for free after his former employer HP showed no interest in the computer.

As rumors of a later-than-usual iPhone launch for 2011 persist, a new report reveals that the notoriously secretive Apple is being even more careful than usual when dealing with overseas suppliers.

"Apple is keeping its iPhone 5 cards extra close to the vest on this launch to avoid a falloff in iPhone 4 demand ahead of a refresh, especially given the February launch of the CDMA iPhone 4 with Verizon," Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said in a note to investors on Friday. He believes that the iPhone 5 could still launch in June or July, as previous models have.

White noted that various rumors have pointed toward a launch later than June this year for the fifth-generation iPhone. One report from March alleged that Apple has not even begun ordering components for the anticipated "iPhone 5," and the device is slated to arrive in the company's 2012 fiscal year, which begins in late September.

And a third report alleged that Apple is working on a major revamp of iOS, its mobile operating system, for version 5.0. New features like cloud-based storage of music, photos and video are rumored to arrive in the update this fall, likely alongside new iPhone hardware.

But despite all of those reports, White isn't yet convinced that the iPhone 5 will be introduced later than its typical June or July timeframe.

"Although we do not have a smoking gun that definitively rules out a delayed autumn unveiling or one that supports a launch this summer, there is a pattern of activity in motion with the supply chain that makes us question a delayed launch," he said.

White also cited sources who indicated that iPad sales could reach up to 40 million units in calendar year 2011. And supply chain sources also indicated that disruption from the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan will actually end up benefitting Apple, as suppliers will "rush to support Apple at the expense of competitors."

The analyst already revealed earlier this week that Apple has been offering upfront cash payments to component suppliers in order to secure components in the wake of the disaster in Japan. Apple has apparently also been using a "three cover guarantee," referring to capacity, stock and price, to block out competitors and prevent them from building ample supply of devices.

Over the years, entrepreneurs and corporate executives have devised any number of clever ways for getting rich off the working poor, but you'd have to look long and hard to find one more diabolically inventive than the RAL. Say you have a $2,000 tax refund due and you don't want to wait a week or two for the IRS to deposit that money in your bank account. Your tax preparer would be delighted to act as the middleman for a very short-term bank loan—the RAL. You get your check that day or the next, minus various fees and interest charges, and in return sign your pending refund over to the bank. Within 15 days, the IRS wires your refund straight to the lender. It's a safe bet for the banks, but that hasn't stopped them from charging astronomical interest rates. Until this tax year, the IRS was even kind enough to let lenders know when potential borrowers were likely to have their refund garnished because they owed back taxes, say, or were behind on child support.

Hewitt didn't invent the refund anticipation loan. That distinction belongs to Ross Longfield, who dreamed up the idea in 1987 and took it to H&R Block CEO Thomas Bloch. "I'm explaining it," Longfield recalls, "but Tom is sitting there going, 'I don't know; I don't know if people are going to want to do that.'"

Tax-prep shops are as common as fast-food joints in many low-income neighborhoods—there are at least half a dozen on one three-block stretch of South Broadway in Yonkers, N.Y., where these photographs were taken. A few offer reasonably priced accounting, while others charge hundreds of dollars for 20 minutes of work. But Longfield knew. He worked for Beneficial Corp., a subprime lender specializing in small, high-interest loans for customers who needed to finance a new refrigerator or dining-room set. His instincts told him the RAL would be a big hit—as did the polling and focus groups he organized. "Everything we did suggested people would love it—love it to death," he says.

He also knew Beneficial would make a killing if he could convince tax preparers—in exchange for a cut of the proceeds—to peddle this new breed of loan on his employer's behalf. Ultimately, Longfield persuaded H&R Block to sign up. But no one was as smitten as John Hewitt—who understood that people earning $15,000 or $20,000 or $25,000 a year live in a perpetual state of financial turmoil. Hewitt began opening outposts in the inner cities, Rust Belt towns, depressed rural areas—anywhere the misery index was high. "That was the low-hanging fruit," he says. "Going into lower-income areas and delivering refunds quicker was where the opportunity was."

Customers wanting a RAL paid Jackson Hewitt a $24 application fee, a $25 processing fee, and a $2 electronic-filing fee, plus 4 percent of the loan amount. On a $2,000 refund, that meant $131 in charges—equivalent to an annual interest rate of about 170 percent—not to mention the few hundred bucks you might spend for tax preparation. "Essentially, they're charging people triple-digit interest rates to borrow their own money," says Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center.

In 1988, the first year he began offering the loans, Hewitt owned 49 stores in three states. Five years later, he had 878 stores in 37 states. And five years after that, when Cendant Corp.—the conglomerate that owned Avis, Century 21, and Days Inn—bought Jackson Hewitt for $483 million, his earliest backers received a $2 million payout on every $5,000 they'd invested. Today, with 6,000 offices scattered across the country, Jackson Hewitt is more ubiquitous than KFC, and has about as many imitators.

THERE WOULD BE NO refund anticipation loans, of course, without tax refunds. And by extension there would be no RALs without the Earned Income Tax Credit, the federal anti-poverty initiative that served as the mother's milk nourishing the instant-refund boom. Welfare reform was the catalyst for the EITC, which was aimed at putting extra cash in the pockets of low-income parents who worked. What motive does a single mother have to get a job, conservative thinkers asked, if there was scant difference between her monthly take-home pay and a welfare check? It was Richard Nixon who first floated the idea that led to the Earned Income Tax Credit; Ronald Reagan dubbed it "the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress." In 2007, the US Treasury paid out $49 billion to 25 million taxpayers.

Roofing Contractors Vancouver - 5 Questions to Wonder

Roofing Vancouver - Faq's

1. Repair or Replace?

There's no opinion as an expert opinion. Most contractors provides you with a free estimate. Get a list of a couple trusted contractors and phone them well ahead of time of when you wish to get your roof fixed to help you compare costs and opinions.

2. Beauty versus Practicality?

Discuss this with your spouse or partner. (The children could care less...at least the children.) Truth is, nobody wants an ugly roof just like nobody wants to be viewed with bed hair. If you've got a good quality roof and you just have to repair it, it's worth it to pay the cost of the original shingle rather than doing patchwork. A roof replacement doesn't happen very often (we hope!) and thus make a decision that suits you and your loved ones well or it'll stand out like a sore thumb everyday you decide to go home.

3. Must i replace the roof in order to sell the home for more?

Consider this cautiously before making a choice. With respect to the roofing material you select, a new roof lasts between twenty, fifty, to one-hundred years! This means you need to look into the year from the roof that's currently too deep first. Are you at year 18 of a 20-year warranted roof or year 30 of the 50-year warranted roof? Obviously, the quality is the reason why the roof last longer, but when you're not likely to stay in your current home for the rest of your lifetime, the larger expense might not be worth neglect the. Although a new roof can enhance the value of your value, the increase may not be enough to pay for your investment and that's bound to hurt your wallet.

4. Is it advisable that i can repair the roof myself?

Sure it's. Before you need to do, consult an expert first. You can perform it yourself, however, you shouldn't be considered a complete ‘lone ranger.' Depending on the extent of the repair, you might or may not change your mind. Either way, it will help to obtain a professional eye about the problem first and maybe a free quote to help you do the math later and see if it's truly worth your time and effort, sweat, and money to become mister or miss fix-it.

5. Just when was a good time to get the roof replaced?

Weather may cause delays from days to weeks. Most people plan ahead to have their roof replaced in the summertime when they know someone will be home during the day for a solid two weeks. Once you have this era in your mind, make a call to a trusted contractor months in advance to get a quote. Some companies get booked up fast and odds are, they're probably the most reputable. Planning ahead of the summer also gives you time for you to discuss with more and compare costs...especially if you need to have the roof done by a specified date.

Tacoma Roofing company: Make your Home Beautiful

Not many people understand the worth of a solid roof, but your knowledgeable Tacoma Roofing contractor does. From top notch experience, they'll be in a position to let you know the reason why you need a strong, secure, and leak-free roof in your home.

Your local Tacoma Roofing contractor is well aware how important a financial investment your house is for you personally, especially since it is a lasting one. Your house may have been damaged slowly through the years and you need to take steps to minimize this damage. For a lot of people, keeping their property beautiful is also a few pride. You will find those too who'd like to turn their property right into a cost effective and efficient living place. Your roof is a valuable part of your house and plays a role in each one of the aspects mentioned above. For this reason, you need to employ the services of qualified a Tacoma Roofing contractors.

Kinds of Roofs installed by a Tacoma Roofing company

Among the more prevalent types of roofs are asphalt shingles, steel or metal sheeting, fiberglass, slate and terra cotta tiles.

Each type of roof invites distinct problems, however they can be easily taken care of with a trusted Tacoma Roofing contractor. It's vital that you nip roof problems in the bud before they become too expensive or dangerous. You can schedule an appointment with the Tacoma Roofer to take a look at your homes roof to see if you will find any issues or potential problems with it. If there are, they might be able to let you know how to approach them.

A Tacoma Roofer Helps you to Build Strong Homes

The exteriors of any house, primarily the rooftop and gutters, face the onslaught of bitter and varying weather conditions, every single day. Painting, repairing, and cleaning gutters might be necessary. In some instances you might want to replace them completely. Usually, whenever your gutters show signs of trouble, your homes roof also needs to be inspected for problems. Whatever issues there might be, an experienced Tacoma Roofer can examine them at length and suggest the remedy.

If your gutters often clog all too often, or you will find leaks across the walls of your home, it might mean that there is debris piled-up on the roof. Loose branches, piles of leaves, along with other light objects which are swept onto your roof throughout a storm can all contribute towards damaging your homes roof, which damages can be lasting. A knowledgeable Tacoma Roofing contractor will explain that birds, mice, along with other types of rodents often build nest in the debris that collects on the top. While these nests may look rather innocent, they are great at collecting moisture, be responsible for loose shingles, mold, and indoor leaks in your house. In addition, this may also cause vermin infestation. After a storm, your Tacoma Roofing contractor will suggest that you inspect your roof for just about any signs and symptoms of debris or damage.

Reverse Damages with the Help of a Tacoma Roofer

However top quality the roof may be, it is going to wear out over time. You will find shingles which are known as "25 year" or "30 year" shingles, but those numbers are just related to warranty made by the manufacturers. They hardly ever last that long. Realistically speaking, "25 year" shingles won't last more than fifteen to twenty years. In an area that is prone to storms, shingles or even the entire roof may need to get replaced every 10 years. Having a Tacoma Roofing company, the price will be lower than what you believe.

If there you lose any shingles, or there is some damage to them, a Tacoma Roofer will be able to help you. Damaged shingles can result in indoor leaks, since the substrate of the roof becomes exposed to the elements. Shingles which are loose or broken can slip off and pose a potential hazard to individuals standing below. Missing shingles produce a gap which allows rain, wind, ice, and debris to develop underneath the adjoining shingles, which creates a "domino effect" that affects other shingles and they become loose or broken. A thorough investigation is going to be made by your local Tacoma Roofing company, if you call them up with your suspicions of loose or missing shingles.

Your Tacoma Roofer will be in a position to tell you what the best option is for your roof. In case your roof is not in a good condition, it's advised that you have it replaced completely. The Tacoma Roofer can take you thru the various roofing options available to you which will fit your requirements and your budget.

Tacoma Roofing contractor: Enhancing your Home's Efficiency

Your homes roof shelters you against storms, sleet, and hail. By providing adequate ventilation, your homes roof protects your house from overheating, and by holding in the heat, it keeps your house warm. What is Difference Between Commercial Roofing Companies From Residential Roofing Companies

If you are getting a roofing company to re roof your house or building then you can be wondering what are the differences are between residential roofing companies and commercial roofing companies. To begin with, the main one huge difference is that often times a commercial roofing company might have signed a contract with and be obligated to some roofing union in in a position to work on union commercial jobs.

If this sounds like the case then their labor costs will prohibit them from focusing on non union residential jobs. Beyond that, if your commercial roofing company hasn't signed a contract having a union they may be outfitted simply for commercial jobs which of course means their workers and equipment might not be consistent with smaller residential jobs.

Residential roofing contractors generally often run smaller companies and therefore, tend to be more in a position to bid competitively on residential jobs, which are usually small compared to comercial jobs. In fact, quite often residential roofing contractors will run one man operations, in which the contractor that you simply talk to may be the one that actually does the job about the building.

Also, liability insurance for commercial roofing is more expensive along with a larger bond is needed for a commercial roofing work which can make it not economical for any commercial roofing contractor to do residential roofing jobs.

Still an additional factor is that commercial jobs can run on tighter time frame for any number of reasons, requiring a commercial contractor to employ a larger crew or crews which again makes smaller jobs less profitable on their behalf.

Difference Between Commercial Roofing and Residential Roofing

Are you aware that the roof of the building has a huge effect on the entire structure itself? Damage caused to roofs because of natural or another disasters leads to a considerable loss of property everywhere. The kind of materials accustomed to construct the roof which should be sturdy and long-lasting, the manner in which the roof has been installed and even its timely maintenance are extremely crucial. There are two kinds of roofs that are utilized on all the buildings that people see around us: commercial and residential. Even though it may seem that commercial roofing is done only for businesses or offices and residential roofing is performed for apartments and houses, the truth is the differences tend to be more complex than that.

Residential Roofing by jpignanello

Residential roofing is generally completed by just one hired contractor but commercial roofing usually takes an entire team to complete the job. The reason being an industrial roof tends to be larger when it comes to square feet than a residential roof.
Commercial roofs are necessary carefully keeping the character and purpose of the building in your mind. For example, if there is a restaurant in the building then external components like ventilation systems, smoke stacks and pipes will be required. Residential roofs usually do not have such components apart from a chimney or two at the most.
Commercial roofs tends to be flat in design to support further changes in a later period, whereas most residential roofs have peaks and other architectural features like roof gardens.
Commercial roofing is much more expensive than residential roofing because of the special tools, materials and safety equipment which are needed onsite. Often the patching or maintenance jobs are done in segments unlike for any residential roof in which the repair or replacement work can be completed in a short time. This is one more reason why the gear employed for residential roofs is usually smaller and less expensive as well.
Commercial roof installations have a extended period to complete in comparison to residential roof installations and are usually constructed in large sections. In this phase however, you should make sure that there are no leakages, cracks or any other visible deterioration signs as it can certainly cause considerable harm to the whole building.
It is important to install the best roof for any building depending on its purpose. Ensure that you hire a construction company that uses top notch materials and has the best equipment for the job or your investment may turn to be considered a huge loss later.

Appropriate Permits. A Seattle roofing contractor ought to know what permits are needed for fixing your roof. They should be aware of how you can obtain these permits on your behalf. Ask the contractor whether or not they will obtain the permits essential to repair the roof.

A great contractor will give you certificates of insurance for liability and worker's compensation before they begin fixing your roof.
Subcontractors. Verify whether the contractor will be using subcontractors. If so, it is strongly advised that everything contained within this article for verifying whether the contractor is credible also needs to be relevant to subcontractors. You should get the names and license numbers of all subcontractors. You need to verify whether each subcontractor is also insured so you are not held responsible for their accidents.
Pending Legal Actions. You should verify whether you will find any legal actions against the contractor. This is not only essential for verifying if the roofing company is legitimate (credible roofing companies should not need to defend themselves in court), it's also important because a lost lawsuit could cause the contractor to go bankrupt. For those who have made a substantial down payment for services immediately before the company goes bankrupt, you can lose many thousands of dollars and never have your roofing completed.
Material Disposal. Who is accountable for getting rid of the waste generated from the roof being replaced? Will your contractor handle all aspects of the? Can there be one more cost for disposing of this waste?
NRCA Membership. Membership in local or national roofing associations, such as the NRCA, shows resolve for staying current with the most effective means of roof replacement and maintenance. Look for a roofer with a high standard of education regarding their trade.
Replacing your homes roof is a significant investment. Celebrate good sense to inquire about serious questions before using a roofing contractor. Here are a few more tips that you ought to consider when selecting the best roofer for your upcoming roofing replacement.

Payment. Don't create a full payment for services unless all jobs are finished.
Inspection. Don't make a full payment without doing your final inspection of all services rendered.

'Counter-Terror' Policy Targets Uyghurs

2011-04-07
A new report says China uses the threat of terrorism to crack down on Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

AFP
Uyghur men and women chat outside a mosque in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

China's anti-terrorism policy deliberately targets ethnic minority communities such as Uyghurs and Tibetans struggling for greater autonomy, according to a white paper by a rights group.

The policy equates terrorism with groups pushing for more self-governing rights, is too broad in scope, and shirks international human rights commitments, said the Hong Kong and New York-based Human Rights in China (HRIC).

The paper looked into human rights concerns within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a regional intergovernmental organization which includes China and five other member states-Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan-with a total population of 1.5 billion people.

It said the SCO approach to counter-terrorism, modeled on China'sThree Evils doctrine, and highlighting principles of territorial integrity, noninterference in internal affairs, and social stability, contributes to supporting repressive regimes at the expense of human rights.

A failure to demand accountability from the SCO undermines the effectiveness and integrity of the international system in countering terrorism and advancing rule of law, peace, and security, HRIC said.

"China's approach to counter-terrorism is the Three Evils doctrine, and it links terrorism with separatism and extremism," HRIC director Sharon Hom said in an interview.

"This Three Evils approach is overbroad, highly politicized, and while not exclusively applied only to ethnic minority groups, it is regularly applied to Uyghurs and Tibetans in its practice."

Hom said other SCO member states follow China's lead by recognizing Xinjiang and Tibet as inalienable territories of China and repatriating its ethnic minorities who seek asylum within their borders.

"China has enormous clout in the SCO, and you can also see it in the ways in which the other SCO member states and the SCO will completely parrot China's line and China's policy on these two so-called autonomous regions."

Treatment of Uyghurs

The HRIC white paper said it found "serious issues" concerning China's treatment of Uyghurs, including the principle of non-refoulement and potential use of torture during interrogations.

Regulations specific to Xinjiang became part of China's domestic counter-terrorism legal framework in December 2009 when provincial-level lawmakers revised the region's Comprehensive Management of Social Order.

Through the revisions, Chinese authorities were ordered to specifically crack down on the three threats of "terrorism, separatism, and extremism" in the aftermath of the July 2009 ethnic violence in Urumqi which left hundreds dead, according to official media reports.

HRIC called the amendments "unique" to Xinjiang, adding that "such singular focus by the Chinese government ... suggests that the concept of terrorism has been applied in a biased fashion, with the Uyghur community the subject of intense scrutiny and suspicion."

It noted that while China does face real threats of terrorism, "the limited involvement of Uyghurs in terrorist acts cannot serve as justification of widespread repression throughout [Xinjiang] or the labeling of peaceful Uyghur activists under the rubric of the Three Evils."

Adherence to rules

But despite its reliance on the Three Evils doctrine, HRIC wrote, China continues to claim that it is acting to "firmly uphold and fulfill the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council," according to a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

Under U.N. rules, China pledged to oppose the "arbitrary widening" of the scope of fighting terrorism and identifying terrorism with any specific ethnic group or religion.

"The Three Evils doctrine undermines this principled approach and, in doing so, compromises human rights guaranteed under international law, and international counter-terrorism efforts as a whole," HRIC said.

HRIC recommended that Beijing narrow its "Three Evils"-based approach to national security and reformulate its definition of terrorism.

On June 24 last year, Chinese authorities announced they had broken up a "terrorist" ring of a Uyghur separatist group, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), after arresting more than ten of its members involved in an alleged major plot against China.

The announcement said that information leading to the arrest had been obtained through the investigation of 20 "individuals of Chinese citizenship" who had been deported to China on December 20, 2009-the exact date that Cambodia deported 20 Uyghurs seeking asylum following the July 5 ethnic unrest in Urumqi.

The statement also indicated that several of the alleged ETIM members had confessed to participating in a wide array of terrorist activities during interrogation.

Human Rights Watch said in February that the Cambodian government has a "dismal track record" of deporting refugees granted asylum status by the UNHCR, particularly those from neighboring countries such as China and Vietnam.

Ethnic tensions

Millions of Uyghurs-a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim-populate Central Asia and the Xinjiang region.

Ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and majority Han Chinese settlers have simmered for years, and erupted in riots in July 2009 that left some 200 people dead, according to the Chinese government's tally.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining links to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Roofing West Vancouver Problems

Roofing Vancouver

Within Vancouver special care is needed whenever obtaining a estimation for any home. The roof covering company within Vancouver needs to know exactly what they're dealing with whenever taking your roof off. Unexpected expenses are a typical situation in Vancouver and each proprietor ought to be ready

Heritage- being one of the oldest areas within the GVRD you are able to understand that there are some pretty old houses. With a steep pitch roof, most likely in the vicinity of 12/12 message which essentially means Forty five degree position roof. The original roof was cedar tremble sitting on strapping. I'm not sure if it was being lazy or even the norm, in the event that everyone was trying to save money but if you've this particular roof you most likely got more than one layer on the top. The initial continues to be on and 2 additional levels sit over the cedar tremble. I've come across house exactly where 5 levels sat on top of the home. Based on building code nowadays the Vancouver Roofing company should eliminate all layers if a new roofing is to be positioned above. You people tend to pay more because of the steepness, the actual couple of levels of roof, the actual plywood deck and the difficulty. You are probably two feet from your neighbors

Roofing Vancouver

Reduced Slope -- Vancouver special houses run all through East Vancouver. The slight problem with these types of houses when it comes to roof covering is that dwindling roof covering businesses out there perform tar as well as gravel. The choice you've is actually flashlight upon or even steel. Asphalt tiles cannot continue these homes. Your message is to reduced and asphalt probably would not final ten years. Vancouver Roofing contractors which have been in the commercial associated with torch upon in excess of ten years are probably dependable. Snow and ice build up on these roofs trigger mini pools to build up in your roofing as well as trigger main leaking, always keep the gutters and downpipes clear.

Wonky End Roof Line by canadian_club

Low Downward slope or Steep Slope cedar tremble - In Vancouver this is typical about the Western aspect. There is not a lot to say about Cedar in Vancouver. There was an extended time period with the 60's, 1970's and Eighties whenever Vancouver Roofing companies were not setting up cedar. The majority of Cedar roofs tend to be new construction. cedar may be the 1 creation that the majority of problems can be determined prior to the function begins

Low Downward slope or Steep Slope Asphalt roofing -- If you have asphalt roofing and it hasn't been transformed in the last ten years then you have a good deck. Because the 70's asphalt came into the marketplace. With new building shiplap or even also known as language as well as dance had been the only real choice of the solid outdoor patio. Shiplap techniques a lot in the winter and in summer time so plywood ought to be layered lower through the roofer

Roofing in Burnaby

Roof covering in Burnaby can have it's challenges and the easiest way to undergo them all would be to work from North to South beginning towards the top associated with Burnaby. In Northern Burnaby the hills start to slope and decline with a fairly strong angles. The big challenges I've found here are driveway steepness and access to the house, even though this may not seem like the problem for you it is a really big issue for a roofing company that has at hand carry your own old roof up a slope and hands carry your new roofing lower the hill.

Hard, the slope region in this region kept creating companies aside and for that reason you've homes that were just about all constructed through separately employed construction companies. There are several portions associated with North Burnaby which have small contractors houses all constructed together but as far as that Central Burnaby has. Northern Burnaby offers more interesting built styles as well as rooftops making a golf ball recreation area figure estimation in this area fairly hard.

Burnaby Roofing

Main Burnaby is where large construction companies with a standard new method of building the home had been pretty busy during the 70`s and early 80`s. With a shiplap deck becoming the only option and asphalt shingles becoming the choice and placed on a house. Today shiplap is the roofers adversary because of the fact that the tiles of today are not designed to use shiplap. Attempting to persuade central Burnaby they need to re-deck the rooftop with plywood offers frequently been ignored and for good cause.

The quality of shiplap is high in this particular area with most from it that I know of being in between 6 and Eight in . which is ideal. Apart from that this part of Burnaby is fairly simple to roof in with entry not a problem everything frequently along with a clear design in sloped roofing that is clear to see. Lots of Vancouver special offers focused here to with torch on being the number one choice from the original tar and gravel option. Cedar rooftops tend to spread the eastern aspect of this region with many transforming to asphalt

South Burnaby tends to possess bigger roofs that are sprinkled along with asphalt as well as cedar tremble. Cedar shake rooftops in this area are generally from houses close to Two decades aged. This particular home has a tendency to transform into a asphalt roofing and most possess okay access but some don't and the rooftops are not all that in order to high. A few asphalt rooftops down right here actually have plywood decks that is always a big saving idea for any property owner

West Vancouver Roofing

West Vancouver is a area associated with valley's as well as side rails, steep drive-ways as well as hidden roofs. This can be a roofers headache but you will find roofing companies that work in the area as well as understand what they probably could be coping with. Unlike other cities in the Metro Vancouver area, large construction companies did not purchase large tracks of land as well as build patterned suv cul-de-sacs. They are doing exist but to some smaller diploma compared to additional metropolitan areas. Consequently you'll find in one road Twenty homes just about all built differently. I guess because of the property landscape this was the only method to obtain houses built-in some regions.

There was certainly the boom during the 1970's through the shear number of shiplap decks available. Most roofs within West Vancouver that require a replacement tend to be asphalt rooftops which take a seat on a shiplap outdoor patio. These people shingle is normally a lock shingle which was designed for shiplap however no longer obtainable in the higher Vancouver area. The majority of property owners within West Vancouver are understanding they right now require a plyboard deck to pay for the actual shiplap.

L&M Company Port Chester NY - Cedar Roofing by L & M Company

A few Cedar rooftops appear in West Vancouver although not much that needs changing. Most twenty years old cedar tremble roofs in West Vancouver have been replaced so you look for a cedar roof in some places. Replacing cedar along with cedar isn't the just about all in order to common practice and most Cedar rooftops are in new building.

Roofing West Vancouver

Vancouver special offers are not just about all to common in West Vancouver. Torch on and tar and gravel can be obtained but not recommended. The rainfall as well as blowing wind tends to be a little more severe within West Vancouver, using the high amount of trees and shrubs and also the chance of huge snow fall steel is a high suggestion.

Getting a roof estimation within West Vancouver can be very diverse from the individual living right on the doorstep. for those who have a steep front yard, have a roofing that's higher than 30 levels and over 2000 sq ft compared to you are able to pay more than $ 2000 compared to your own neighbour. The type of roof and amount of pulsating can make a big difference. In West Vancouver it is very hard to ball park a price for this really reason. I suppose you could say based on the small land you live upon and also the style of the roof could make a big difference from a high estimate and a reduced estimation. Roofing entry has become a problem with a few roofing contractors needing to hands carry that old roofing over 100 ft compared to hand carrying the new roof one hundred feet towards the house.

Get three estimates to compare apples along with celery and for the exact same product, gives you a chance to educate yourself and ask the best concerns. Most rooftops within West Vancouver is actually below ventilated therefore make certain when you get your homes roof estimation you can see if each and every estimation you receive will upgrade your air flow or your brand-new roof won't final. The additional air flow is not the addition cost therefore the much more the actual merrier, you cannot have a restrict on ventilation. Tree debris is a problem therefore maintain your roofing with no damage the roof item. leak blower is probably the greatest form of maintenance.
